As a podcast recap, we (Nathan Webster & Associates, LLC) created the podcast as a resource to help nonprofits, businesses, and professionals with their marketing efforts. From our (NDUB Brand) agency experiences, promotion and advertising are hard for startups and existing businesses. There’s no secret or magic pill to client acquisition. Every company wants to increase its conversion to win every prospect (that makes sense). As I always say, “Our goal is to make the ambiguity of marketing more simplistic and easier for you to apply to your business.”
If your current marketing plan relies entirely on matching keywords to rank #1 on a traditional search results page, I have some news for you.
As we move through 2026, simply “ranking” isn’t enough anymore. The traditional landscape of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is colliding head-on with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AISEO. If you aren’t optimizing your brand to be found by AI Learning Language search models, you’re leaving money on the table.
On this episode of the Let’s Talk Marketing with NDUB podcast, I sat down with Scott Shockney from Sydekar to make it simple. I wanted him to break down exactly how AI is changing the way users find your brand—since he’d talk about it all the time during our Friday smashburger sessions—and why your old-school SEO playbook needs an immediate overhaul.

1. The Shift from SEO to GEO
In the past, search engines acted like digital phone books, matching a user’s typed keywords to the most relevant website link. Today, generative AI engines (such as Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini) do the heavy lifting for users. Instead of providing a list of links, they synthesize data from across the web to answer complex prompts directly.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your content so AI engines choose your brand as the definitive answer, citation, or recommendation.
The Shift: Traditional SEO focuses on optimizing for algorithms and keywords. GEO focuses on optimizing for synthesis, authority, and contextual relevance.
2. Marketing Tips to Master AI Search
Whether you are a solopreneur just starting out or managing an established enterprise, Scott and I broke down the core pillars you need to focus on to thrive in this new era.
- focus on authority
- speak the language of the customer
- prioritize relational over transactions
When making content, we often think we need the fanciest gear or a massive production budget. Thanks to smartphones, you have all of that in your pocket. AI engines pull from authoritative, original data. Focus on creating deep, comprehensive resources that solve genuine customer pain points.
Another thing to consider, AI engines are highly conversational. People no longer search “best plumber Vancouver WA.” They treat it as another being by asking it actual questions, “My water heater is leaking from the bottom, who can fix it today near me?” Your content needs to address long-tail, conversational queries naturally.
-
Transactional: High-pressure keyword stuffing designed to capture a quick “click.”
-
Relational: Building Brand Equity by creating a clear message that builds comfort and solves a genuine problem.
AI models prioritize highly cited, trusted sources. If your brand treats every user like a one-time transaction, your digital footprint will shrink. Build genuine relational authority online.
3. The “Supporting Cast” Factor
Why aren’t more business owners adapting to AI tech? My personal belief is fear. At the point of fear, your mindset shouldn’t be a ‘chase’ but to ‘attract’ the right people, resources, and exposure into your life.
Don’t be scared to push your boundaries and limits. Easier said than done, but this is definitely when it counts. #beyou
Take one step at a time. This isn’t a sprint; it’s okay to fail forward. All the magic operates outside of your comfort zone.
Every visionary founder needs a “Supporting Cast.” Whether you work with a network of fellow business owners (my preferred model) or seek out expert guidance, your growth is capped by the quality of the people in your corner.
In this episode, having a specialist like Scott share insights from Sydekar is a perfect example of how to leverage a supporting cast to stay ahead of market disruptions. He’s the expert, so it makes sense.
Right? Don’t overthink it.
Key Takeaways for the AI Era:
-
Audit Your Digital Footprint: Are AI engines able to easily read, synthesize, and cite your website?
-
Invest in Relationships: Stop looking for a quick “sale” and start looking to provide a comprehensive “solution.”
-
Guard Against Procrastination: The AISEO landscape is moving fast. Don’t wait until your organic traffic drops to zero to start learning how generative engines treat your brand.
Be careful of any advice from folks who aren’t active professionals in the field where you’re seeking growth. Not everyone is going to be a fan of your dream, and the work of an entrepreneur can get very lonely. Surround yourself with the right insights.
