Ever look at your social media metrics and wonder if they’re real…
Are you actually talking to someone or screaming into a void?
You drop a post on LinkedIn, and within five seconds… bam! Two likes from profiles you’ve never seen in your life. You didn’t even have time to copy the link, and somehow they’ve read, digested, and approved your 500-word breakdown.
Or, you accepted their request to connect… bam! They’ve sent you this message.
Here is a reality check: They didn’t read it. They’re bots. Or, it’s AI.
In a world obsessed with massive reach, the matrix is starting to glitch. If you are building your entire business growth strategy on the back of vanity metrics, you’re building on a deck of cards.
I recently sat down for a 3rd time with marketing veteran Laurier Mandin (founder of Graphos Product) on the Let’s Talk Marketing podcast to rip the mask off social media and talk about what it actually takes to win the game of business help and marketing strategy today.
Like I’ve said before, we’re gonna keep social media real…

The Great Social Media Purge
If you think fake engagement is just a problem for small accounts, think again. Laurier recently broke down what went down during a massive platform cleanup.
Look at what happened to some of the biggest names on the planet when the algorithm decided to do some housekeeping:
Platforms called it a removal of “inactive” or “non-organic” accounts. Translation? The ghost accounts and automated bots got sent to the graveyard.
If a celebrity loses the population of a small country from their follower counts in a single afternoon, what does that mean for you and your B2B marketing efforts? It means you do not own your audience.
The Hard Truth: Platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok are incredible tools. They lift us up and give us a stage. But never forget that Jeff Bezos owns Amazon, and Meta owns Instagram. What they give you out of generosity today, they can strip away tomorrow with zero warning.
These platforms are great for being seen, but you need a purpose behind it. If you’re talking (aka, promoting) without a CTA, people will start ignoring you.
Use these social media giants to create a client pipeline with a real offer once you’ve built a relationship.
The Death of Authenticity
Because of this obsession with numbers, automation has taken over, and it’s killing real networking.
You’ve experienced this if you’re on LinkedIn. You accept a connection request there, and before you can even click the Home button, your inbox lights up with a 4-paragraph sales script explaining how much they love you and why they have the perfect program.
Well, not all of them, but enough to where it gets really annoying.
They don’t know who you are. They haven’t looked at your feed. They just know you fit a generic “client avatar” checklist. Laurier calls this getting pitch-slapped, and it is the fastest way to get your account blocked or deleted.
Think about it like a real-world business mixer. You wouldn’t open the front door, walk up to a stranger, shove your business card in their nose, and demand a 30-minute Zoom meeting to “explore synergies.” It’s rude. It lacks decorum.
If you want to use social media for business growth, you have to treat people the way you’d want to be treated. Look at their posts. Engage with their content. Build a relationship first. Good business is built on chemistry and trust, not transactional algorithmic spam.
Shift from Mass Media to an “Audience of One”
We are living through a massive cultural shift. The days of the “water cooler monoculture,” where everybody watched the exact same television show on Thursday night and talked about it at work on Friday, are dead. Prof G said that’s how we built community, which is why social media has changed that.
Content consumption is fragmented.
This is actually a massive advantage for small businesses and independent creators if you change your mindset.
When you produce content, whether it’s an email newsletter, a YouTube video, or a podcast episode, stop trying to talk to 10,000 people at once. Radio is a mass medium; podcasting and digital content are intimate.
Your listener has their headphones on while they are cutting the grass, doing the dishes, or driving. They aren’t a crowd. They are a single person.
-
You do not need a million subscribers to build a highly profitable business.
-
You do not need 10,000 likes to validate that your offer has value.
-
If you get 20 views on a video, be happy. You can’t even fit 20 people inside your car!
If you can connect deeply with one right-fit person at a time, solve their specific pain points, and bring them massive value, you have a real business model.
Want to Build a System That Actually Works?
If you are sick of the algorithmic guessing game and want to learn how to build authentic, high-value marketing systems that turn real eyeballs into revenue, I’m launching something special just for you.
This summer, I’m opening up my brand new 6-Week DIY Marketing Kit Cohort. I’ve been teaching marketing at the college level for over a decade, and I’m packing everything I know into a step-by-step, actionable framework designed for business owners who want to work smarter, not harder.
Here is exactly what we are building together week-by-week:
-
Week 1: The Avatar – Stop guessing. Define the exact right-fit person who will value your offer the most.
-
Week 2: The Customer Journey – Map out exactly how a stranger goes from discovering your brand to trusting your voice.
-
Week 3: Funnel Overview – Visualizing and structuring your digital pipeline without the technical overwhelm.
-
Week 4: Systemization – Turning your marketing into a machine that runs smoothly without eating up your entire calendar.
-
Week 5: The Sales Script & Offer – Crafting a high-converting call-to-action (CTA) that makes people want to buy without feeling slimy.
-
Week 6: Putting It All Together – Launching your system into the world alongside a community of peer support.
No digital walls of text. No corporate fluff. Just real, foundational marketing execution.
