Have you ever scrolled through your feed and felt like you’re the only one not crushing it?
The pressure of social media perfectionism is a heavy burden, and honestly, the “illusion of success” might actually be hurting your business, your relationships, and your marketing.
In Episode 312 of Let’s Talk Marketing, it’s just me. No guest needed for this topic. I’ve been posting these “Keeping Social Media Real” on LinkedIn, FB, and Instagram, but I needed to do a podcast on it. In my opinion, marketing is “showing up” in real life or on social media.
There shouldn’t be a separation of these two experiences.
After a lunch meeting, I wanted to share because we weren’t meant to be isolated.
I’m pulling back the curtain on the fake reality we see online every day in a raw, unfiltered conversation about why you need to start “Keeping Social Media Real.” Watch the video: Click Here.
If you’ve ever felt the pressure to compete with everyone else’s highlight reel on your feed, this episode is for you. The quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” is paramount. Here’s how to stop playing the comparison game, stop hiding behind a filter, and stop doomscrolling.
Whether you’re starting to build a personal brand that actually connects or just updating your profile, just don’t consume; produce content.
I’m going to give you four ways to get unstuck and start showing up authentically. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s worth it.
4 Tips to Keep Your Social Media Real as an Entrepreneur
1. Stop Living a Highlight Reel
When we look at social media, we’re only seeing a snapshot of someone’s life. The vacations, the big sales, the glamorous networking events. Let’s keep it real.
Trying to compete with someone else’s highlight reel is a marketing trap that keeps you feeling inadequate and stressed.
Authenticity beats the highlight reel every single time.
People don’t want a fake, polished reality; they want a real solution from a real person that makes sense to them.
When you show up as you actually are, flaws and all, that’s more believable.

Marketing Tip: create content that is easy for you to reproduce and that embodies you. Share a post this week about a challenge you faced or a mistake you made. It’ll be great for viewers to see your human side and get to know your real environment. For them, vulnerability builds trust.
As a bonus tip, feel free to do a skit or dance to a song.
2. Acknowledge the Hidden Struggles
It’s easy to look at big influencers online who constantly shout that they are “crushing it” and think, “I just need to hustle harder to be like them.” Stop. You have my permission to quit comparing your behind-the-scenes to their main stage.
Behind every “crushing it” post, there are hidden struggles you don’t see. Late nights, failed launches, and serious moments of doubt. I’ve found the business serving influencers shares these problems. For example, I see this with Mel Robbins, Alex Hormozi, Leila Hormozi, David Goggins, Myron Golden, David Shands, and, of course, Dr. Eric Thomas.
Your online brand (aka business) must reflect your unique journey and lifestyle.
- personal brand – every HR will search you to learn of your digital existence, character, integrity, and experience
- entrepreneur brand – every prospect will seek your digital footprint to see if you’re qualifed and experienced to help them
Authenticity ≠ No Privacy!
Sharing your hidden struggles means you’re a real person.
Let’s keep it real: you don’t know what anyone’s bank account actually looks like or the stress they’re under. You only know what they tell you. Mimicking their polished exterior may mean you inherit their hidden problems without their infrastructure.
-
Marketing Tip: Your everyday, unfiltered lifestyle is a powerful, authentic tool. Hence, why you should share times when you’re at your desk brainstorming, dealing with a setback, or just having everyday thoughts. Don’t always make your platforms a non-stop celebration of happy moments.
As a bonus tip, you can share something that happened a long time ago as a flashback or throwback.
3. Will the Real People Please Stand Up?
This issue is a hard one for most people because the biggest hurdle isn’t the algorithm. They struggle with their own mindset and fear of judgment. An amateur waits for the perfect moment; an entrepreneur creates the moment.
If you’re still treating your social media like a strict corporate PR firm where everything has to be perfectly scripted, you’re creating a wall between you and your ideal client.
- adults and kids record in the bedrooms
- recordings are done in selfie mode in the car
- livestreams aren’t gaming
- popular behind the scenes are even social media posts
You want to grow the company to afford you the lifestyle you want, not build another fake persona you have to work 24/7 to maintain.
Trust me, I get it.
On a personal level, this was hard for me, but I realized I just needed to speak my truth. Whenever I get in front of the camera to give advice, I’m not always the polished “nice guy.” I’ve surprised some folks with how blunt I am, but they understood it was all about providing real value and achieving results.
-
Marketing Tip: Authenticity is a game-changer. A good example of this is when I step in as a fractional CMO. I don’t sugarcoat the problems. I show up, tell the truth, and execute. Use your platforms to speak directly and honestly to your audience’s pain points without the fluff.
As a bonus tip, find a topic that comes easy to you and share it. Focus on the publishing, not the production. And definitely ignore the vanity metrics.
4. Control the Output, Not the Outcome
We stress out because a post didn’t get enough likes, comments, or shares (aka – vanity metrics). But your business should support your life, not consume your mental health over vanity metrics.
Are you building a “hustle” that requires you to go viral every week, or a consistent system that provides reciprocal value?
If your current model requires you to sacrifice your peace of mind for a few likes, the model is broken. When you have a push-through mentality solely focused on engagement numbers, the anxiety piles up, and you’re buried.
Focus on what you can actually control: the output. Creating the content, sharing your message, and showing up consistently.
-
Marketing Tip: Delegation and systemization are key here. Focus on the act of creating, not the audience’s reaction. Use a CRM or scheduling tool to auto-post your content so you aren’t obsessively refreshing your feed waiting for validation.
In the last round of our guys’ golf trip in Whistler, Canada, they were tired of me “trying” to get good content. But I knew it was a boring video, so I had to add captions and cut some other stuff out.
Build Your Brand on Truth
No, we’re not trying to win a popularity contest. Your avatar is your ideal client, and you can’t sell to everyone.
When you try to be “perfect” for every potential lead, you end up with a diluted brand. Defining your authentic voice allows you to speak directly to the person who actually needs your help and is willing to pay for it.
Your brand isn’t for everyone, so create it for those who will use it and love you for it. As the entrepreneur doing the work, “fake” doesn’t pay the bills. I had to learn that the hard way. The business you created needs the real you to keep it alive and going.
Stepping out on faith means trusting that your unpolished, authentic style is enough. Stop trying to be the “polished” version of someone else and start being the powerhouse version of yourself.
